Seeing Blue: Sequined Shorts and Artwork

malindaknowles5

I finally posted more of my artwork on the blog! Check it out now. More artwork will be coming and prints will be available so make sure to bookmark the ones that you really love!

This past weekend I took photos with my Songs of Freedom painting and got into a ‘blue’ spirit with sequined shorts from English Rose. I got them from Natre, an amazing, moderately priced boutique in Soho (thank you Natre)! Anyway, I just love the shorts. They’re great for a not-so-casual day or girl’s night out. They’re very comfortable too. I paired them with a black silk top and glitzy accessories and a chunky ring.

If you like the big, chunky, ring thing, check these out; 1)McQueen Skull Ring, $318    2) Cavalli Snake Knuckle Duster, $397   3) NastyGal Beetle Ring, $15  4) Mikey Snake Ring, $32

My Sketch Model Wasn’t Skinny Enough

MalindaKnowlesfashionsketch2012
Rough Fashion Sketch by Malinda Knowles, 2012

I have a confession to make. When I first learned how to sketch fashion models and various fabrics, I remember being repeatedly chastised for drawing too wide of a nose and hips. It was like I had to re-learn the human body outside of my own shape or what I thought most people look like. Now, hey, fashion language is fashion language. And, fashion rules are ‘rules.’ Right? At this point, there’s just a few books being used to teach sketching, and an entire segment of our population is being ignored.

I’m not just talking about plus-size folks. I’m talking about anyone above a sample size. Anyone who isn’t at least five feet eight inches tall and skinny. And the largest segment, anyone who isn’t fair-skinned. It was funny that in class I naturally drew some color on my models while many others reached for the light pink marker only. Nothing wrong with that in class, but isn’t there something wrong with that in real life?

As Fashion Week (or month) approaches, we will all wait with bated breath to see the new Spring 2014 Collections, but we will also wait to see if anyone used a different marker for their models. That is, will we see any African-Americans or just plain non-white models on the runway? Recently, designers have missed the mark. And as the rich and famous (i.e. Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kelly, Beyoncé) continue to be a muse and advertisement for designers, what does it really say that they can be photographed in the merchandise but no model on the runway can look like them?

Now you may care less and really this is not about my personal feelings. This is business. The world does not all look the same. I have admittedly not done my statistical research but from what I know, non-white women buy and enjoy high-end fashion as well.  So why not break up the monotony of those fashion sketch models and moreover real-life models on the runway and represent the true diversity of the world?

08zJPRACE1-popupAccording to the New York Times, fashion model Iman will be organizing a social media campaign at the beginning of New York Fashion Week to bring attention to the lack of diversity on the runways in the past several years. She contends that something is “terribly wrong.” Her experience in the 1980s and 1990s was that designers would routinely hire black models and now they barely hire one.

Whatever happens, I just hope that designers and the industry can wake up and see that huge business opportunities are being missed by completely ignoring of an entire group of people.

Sincerely,

Last Dog Days of Summer: Natural on the Beach in Singer Island

MalindaSingerIsland

This past weekend I spent time with loved ones in my home state of Florida. I got some work done and some play too. The beach was gorgeous. I opted for a completely no-fuss natural look to enjoy the last dog days of summer. It’s always great to visit your hometown and feed your spirit with the love of family. I hope you’re soaking up some of the last rays of summer too and had a great weekend.

For last-minute bikinis on sale, check out Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale ending today or my Summer is in the Air Collection on Lyst here.

Clover Canyon Crop Top Combo at The Social Life Magazine St. Barths Hamptons Gala

DSC00468

Last weekend I also attended the Social Life Magazine St. Barths Hamptons Gala and wore a Clover Canyon crop top combo. Although a bit ‘revealing’ I’m still loving crop tops and by the looks of what’s next for  Resort 2014, they don’t seem to be going anywhere. It was really hot and muggy but I had fun under the tent chatting and checking out the different sponsors. It was a simple look but after a long day of fun in the sun in Montauk it worked.

If you’re in the area, this is a great weekend to skip over to the Hamptons. Russell Simmons will be having his annual Art For Life event honoring Rashid Johnson, Samuel Englebardt, Tyler Perry and more. Maxwell, Rick Ross and Estelle are performing as well. Southampton is also holding its annual Art Fair. I will be staying in the city this weekend to get some work done but you should definitely go out if you can. Check out more of what’s happening here.

Montauk Beach House Pool Party and Milly Resort 2014 Fashion Presentation

DSC00388

Last weekend I got plenty of sun in the nearly 100 degree weather at the Montauk Beach House. Michelle Smith showed her Milly Resort 2014 Collection in a beautiful fashion presentation by the pool, part of a summer-long music and fashion series hosted by the Montauk Beach House. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and last weekend, I was on the beach or by the pool for 80% of the time!

Singer-songwriter Natalia Kills performed and we enjoyed great drinks and music all Saturday afternoon. I just loved the bright, bold colors in the collection, not to mention that much of it looked really comfortable. Artwork seemed to influence Milly as some of the fabric seemed painted like that on the model above. Crop tops kept cropping up in Milly’s Resort 2014 Collection as well. I don’t think they’re going anywhere.

I wore a pink neon Eres itty-bitty bikini along with an exclusive purple hat from couture milliner Ellen Christine’s Spring 2014 Collection. By the way, if you want a couture hat of your own, she’s giving a 10% discount to blog readers. Just call her showroom and mention the blog.

While there I met a few from the Milly team, spotted some great poolside fashion and ran into Cannon Hodge of Bergdorf Goodman. She and her friend were wearing amazing kaftans from Camilla Franks that should be available at Bergdorfs in a few months. She showed me that this particular kaftan could be tied multiple ways for a causal or dressy look. Looks like it will be available soon at BG for about $500 or so.

Milly’s collection isn’t quite available yet but for some of the looks here, check out my Summer is in the Air Collection or Shopbop’s Best of Summer 2013.

Wear These Blockbuster Premiere Charlotte Olympia Sandals on Your Next Movie Date

charlotte-olympia-blockbuster-print-blockbuster-premiere-sandal-product-1-11838958-747448479

You might think they’re borderline cheesy but even if so, you’ve got to give it to Charlotte Olympia for her creativity with shoes! I really appreciate her tendency to think outside of the box and do something different.

I think these are great shoes for a summer movie date. Perhaps with some nice blue jeans (Nordstrom has a bunch on sale) and a blazer like this Helmut Lang Smoking Tux Blazer . Or a little black dress like this one from BCBG or this Blaque Label dress. Try these for an original look.

They’re available now at ModaOperandi for $845.

Sincerely,

Playing Mad Hatter with Ellen Christine

DSC00333

Last week I went to visit Ellen Christine’s gorgeous showroom downtown in the 100 degree New York summer heat wave and played mad hatter with a few of her newest hats! I had so much fun with the hats that I had to take a few home with me! Ellen Christine has been a milliner for decades, first getting her start in costume design. She’s done work throughout the industry, most recently with Phillip Lim, Joe Fresh and Jill Stuart. Hats may be something that your grandmother wore, but they can definitely be a great way to spice up any outfit! And not to mention, look like a proper lady. Kate Middleton seems to wear them all the time and it definitely works for her.

DSC00334DSC00332

Ellen and I had a great conversation, here’s a bit of what we talked about.

How did you get started?

I always did costume if not theatrical, then rock and roll, and then at one point was on the road with the producer and they decided they wanted a gladiator hat…so I had to make it. And that’s what started the non-sensical hat making. I started making hats for friends and designers in the early 1980s and it’s always been vintage-historic leaning towards the crazy people from other eras.

What specific eras inspire you?

Post World War I and Edwardian era. When women were first starting to be free.

On artwork inspiring her...

Old world drooping ostrich feathers, I love Duchamp and the Impressionists. (Artwork) gives me pause. Calder movement, light and shape on canvas, and the different feelings that it gives. I’m the mind of a child of the 1960s and it’s all about flow.

What’s your favorite hat you’ve ever made?

I don’t think it’s ever happened yet it’s like a bad boyfriend that keeps cheating on you…it’s an ongoing process of being in love.

I just love Ellen’s whimsical hats, they push the envelope and can really add something to your outfit. As I said, I left with two hats and one purple one (in the last photo below) from her exclusive Spring 2014 Collection. I can’t wait to wear them. If you love her couture hats, good news. Ellen Christine is giving blog readers a discount! Just call the showroom (212-242-2457), make an appointment or talk by phone and get a hat at a 10% discount!
