River Flows Painting

Good evening everyone! I just added my River Flows painting to the site. I created it last year but hadn’t put it up. I just love the color blue and went on an abstract tip to create this painting. I love the ocean and water so simply recreated a bird’s eye view of land. The black is a target and the red is a dock. Don’t ask how these things come to me but I hope you enjoy. Oh, and if you really love it, there are prints, pillows, masks and more (as seen below) that you can buy here.

Sincerely,

Fave Looks So Far from New York Fashion Week SS 2016 (And Givenchy! *Swoon*)

Tanya Taylor

These have to be some of my favorite looks so far from the New York Fashion Week Spring 2016 shows. I’ve seen lots of pink, blue, sequins and feathers on the runway and am just loving it. Tanya Taylor had an amazing show and the shoes were to die for! I have to say though Givenchy (watch it here) had to be my favorite show thus far. I feel bad for the model that really fell and bloodied herself but it  didn’t stop a thing. The face makeup, jewelry and craftmanship that Givenchy displayed was just out of this world. Take a look at the show below if you haven’t seen it already and what do you think of the season so far?

malinda knowles

This winter I’ve had fun with this geometric fit and flare dress from Nordstrom (similar red Felicity and Coco dress $118 and blue Topshop dress $80). It’s warm, you can dress it up or down, and the flare makes you feel girly! I love it.

Seeing Blue: Sequined Shorts and Artwork

malindaknowles5

I finally posted more of my artwork on the blog! Check it out now. More artwork will be coming and prints will be available so make sure to bookmark the ones that you really love!

This past weekend I took photos with my Songs of Freedom painting and got into a ‘blue’ spirit with sequined shorts from English Rose. I got them from Natre, an amazing, moderately priced boutique in Soho (thank you Natre)! Anyway, I just love the shorts. They’re great for a not-so-casual day or girl’s night out. They’re very comfortable too. I paired them with a black silk top and glitzy accessories and a chunky ring.

If you like the big, chunky, ring thing, check these out; 1)McQueen Skull Ring, $318    2) Cavalli Snake Knuckle Duster, $397   3) NastyGal Beetle Ring, $15  4) Mikey Snake Ring, $32

Playing Mad Hatter with Ellen Christine

DSC00333

Last week I went to visit Ellen Christine’s gorgeous showroom downtown in the 100 degree New York summer heat wave and played mad hatter with a few of her newest hats! I had so much fun with the hats that I had to take a few home with me! Ellen Christine has been a milliner for decades, first getting her start in costume design. She’s done work throughout the industry, most recently with Phillip Lim, Joe Fresh and Jill Stuart. Hats may be something that your grandmother wore, but they can definitely be a great way to spice up any outfit! And not to mention, look like a proper lady. Kate Middleton seems to wear them all the time and it definitely works for her.

Ellen and I had a great conversation, here’s a bit of what we talked about.

How did you get started?

I always did costume if not theatrical, then rock and roll, and then at one point was on the road with the producer and they decided they wanted a gladiator hat…so I had to make it. And that’s what started the non-sensical hat making. I started making hats for friends and designers in the early 1980s and it’s always been vintage-historic leaning towards the crazy people from other eras.

What specific eras inspire you?

Post World War I and Edwardian era. When women were first starting to be free.

On artwork inspiring her...

Old world drooping ostrich feathers, I love Duchamp and the Impressionists. (Artwork) gives me pause. Calder movement, light and shape on canvas, and the different feelings that it gives. I’m the mind of a child of the 1960s and it’s all about flow.

What’s your favorite hat you’ve ever made?

I don’t think it’s ever happened yet it’s like a bad boyfriend that keeps cheating on you…it’s an ongoing process of being in love.

I just love Ellen’s whimsical hats, they push the envelope and can really add something to your outfit. As I said, I left with two hats and one purple one (in the last photo below) from her exclusive Spring 2014 Collection. I can’t wait to wear them. If you love her couture hats, good news. Ellen Christine is giving blog readers a discount!
