Summer Casual: African Print Jumper at the MTV VMAs 2013 Song of the Summer Celebration with Jason Derulo and Timeflies

DSC00872

This week I attended one of the MTV VMA Song of Summer Celebration Concerts with Jason Derulo and Timeflies at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Summer casual was the name of the game as the summer heat made its way ‘back’ to the city. I did my favorite Bebe African Print jumper and Christian Louboutin metallic heels and it was great because it was really hot out!

I met stylists and photographers Rachel and Nicole. Rachel was wearing this great Topshop Motel Skirt I’ve seen everywhere. Anyway, MTV has been doing these concerts all through the week with celebrities like Ciara and Robin Thicke. Are you excited for the VMAs?

Opening Reception at the Milk Gallery for Jonathan Mannion’s Rough Around The Edges Polaroid Photography Exhibit

MannionPhotography_KanyeWest_malindaknowlesnet

This week I stopped by the Milk Gallery for Jonathan Mannion’s Rough Around the Edges Photography Exhibit Opening Reception. Mannion is most known for his iconic Hip Hop photography: the portraits of DMX covered in blood for “Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood,” Ludacris’ “Back For the First Time” album cover, Jay Z’s “Reasonable Doubt,” Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Ni**a Please,” and more. Amazingly, his work was done with a Polaroid camera.

The DJ was absolutely amazing and kept the crowd rocking while the crowd sipped to Ciroc cocktails and Red Stripe beer. The crowd was also decked out in their most fashionable summertime party gear and I met a few interesting people. Model Stevie Finedore (pictured below) wore a black and white dress, I saw lots of cutouts and crop tops, and other summer essentials like maxi dressesrompers and printed pants. Check out photos of what they wore and more of Mannion’s photography below. The exhibit is on until July 9th so check it out!

More Funky Street Style, Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s Exhibition Punk: Chaos to Couture

punkmodamohawkrippedsweater

So I am so excited that this year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s Exhibition entitled Punk: Chaos to Couture is all about punk and funky street style. I’ve blogged about funky street style almost all year; New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013Versace’s Milan Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013, and even created an amazing set of mix and match items for your every day (or night) funky street style. The punk and grunge look is what is now and if it’s not your style, you should try a piece or two and see what it feels like! If anything you can try a nice biker leather jacket or vest like the one I wore here.

hermesgraffitihandbag_malindaknowlesnetI can’t wait to see what everyone wears at the Met Gala this coming May 6ModaOperandi will be live streaming the red carpet at 7 PM. They are also giving our readers the opportunity to pre-order looks straight off the red carpet from Anthony Vacarello, Balmain, Delpozo, Rodarte, Nina Ricci and Wes Gordon on May 7. I will be live tweeting and running around the city as usual. Get excited and check out Exclusive Punk Collection, I’m kind of loving these mohawk headpieces and Hermes‘ attempt at the graffiti trend with their new Kelly bag. They even etched “New York City” on there for us locals and NYC lovers.

The NastyGal Story: Fastest-Growing LA Company

Nasty-Gal1

As a 22-year-old community college dropout, Sophia Amoruso started selling one-of-a-kind vintage pieces on eBay and, according to the New York Times, Nasty Gal sold nearly $100 million in clothing and accessories last year. The name was inspired by the “Nasty Gal” album made by 1970s acid-funk pioneer Miles Davis and his wife Betty Davis.

So, with the “Nasty Gal” edge of Betty Davis, Sophia Amoruso’s NastyGal lends itself to the perfect place for the cute and pretty look, yes, but a good bit of what I like to call funky street style. And with its highly affordable prices ($15-$60 on average per item) the online retailer does not disappoint. They’re also doing free shipping on orders over $150!

Check out the site here.

Funky Street Style, Grunge, Punk and Pop Art on the Runway during NYFW FW 2013

halloween-makeup-facepaint-face-paint-costume-pop-art

So, grunge, punk, pop art and New York street style walked the runway during this past New York Fashion Week.  Jeantrix, Tumbler & Tipsy,  Ashton Michael and Jeremy Scott all gave us funky street style, embracing New York for Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013. They all combined funky street style with grunge, goth, punk rock, art or pop art images while fully embracing city life and taking their imaginations to another level.

Jeremy Scott fully embraced color, specifically neons, with major inspiration from pop art.

Ashton Michael’s “Black Heart” Collection gave us full New York City chic grunge shown at Conair Style 360 New York Fashion Week.

Jeantrix, originally from Philadelphia, has always embraced the pop art theme. Check out the multicolored leather jacket on the male model in their Lucid Dreams F/W 2013 Collection Fashion Film (featuring their version of the Harlem Shake).

Also shown at Conair Style 360, some funky punk rock looks from Tumbler and Tipsy.
